The pneumatic post (also called pneumatic telegraph sometimes) is a system used to deliver quickly mail (telegrams, letters and small packets...) through pressurized air tubes, inside cylindrical containers.
Invented in the 1800s by Scottish engineer William Murdoch, these pneumatic post systems were developed in several major cities from the second half of the 19th century (London in 1861, Berlin in 1865, Paris in 1866, Vienna in 1875...).
This system was largely abandoned from the middle of the 20th century, replaced by new means of communication.
The first line of the pneumatic post network in Prague was completed in 1887, the first system being commissioned in 1889.
On June 21, 2017, the Czech Post put into circulation an interesting stamp (domestic permanent rate "A" - 16 CZK currently) on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of this Prague pneumatic post ("Pražská potrubní pošta").
That stamp, designed by Dušan Kállay and representing several postal dwarves playing in this pneumatic network, appears on the official FDC from Prague above (print run: 4,000). Thank you very much Bret!
I really love the FDC cancellation featuring one of these same dwarves clinging to a container :)
It should be noted that this pneumatic system in Prague (55 km long) is the last one still in operation in the world, although it stopped operating following the floods in 2002... http://timbredujura.blogspot.com/2017/08/prague-pneumatic-post-stamp-on-czech-fdc.html
